What is Google Cloud multicast?

Multicast is a networking communication method that allows the transmission of data to multiple recipients simultaneously with a single packet. Unlike unicast, which sends data to a single destination, or broadcast, which sends data to every device in a network, multicast sends data only to those devices that express interest in receiving it, known as group members. This results in efficient use of network bandwidth and reduces the impact on network traffic. Multicast is commonly used for streaming multimedia content, real-time communication, and software updates.

Multicast or unicast?

Unicast and multicast are two different methods of data transmission in networking. Unicast is a one-to-one method where there's a separate transmission from the source to each receiver. This means if there are X receivers, there will be X unique streams of data. It is widely used in most Internet traffic, especially for web browsing and server downloads. Multicast is a one-to-many or many-to-many method that allows data to be sent from one or more sources to a group of receivers. In this case, the information is sent only once and duplicated across the network to multiple receivers, saving bandwidth. It's ideal for streaming media, live radio or video broadcasts, Internet of Things and financial services.
